Assignment Planning – The non familiar

The Brief –

For our first assignment, we need to make five portraits of five different people of our local area who were previously unknown to us.

The aim of this assignment is to move out of our comfort zone and try to photograph people we don’t know.  The advice if possible is to spend time with our subject and to get to know them before even showing them the camera.

Planning the assignment –

So first I started to make some notes about my ideas for this assignment my first plan was to try and put a post out to see if any families were interested to have some photographs done I did this but only two families replied but the problem I was having was that the first family was happy to have the photoshoot on the 28 July and the other family was only available on the 22 August both families have asked if they can have their photographs did at dreamers bay I am very happy with that as it is a lovely location.  I have also promised both families a USB stick with the final edited images.  I think that the reason I was planning to go down this route was that I am hoping in the future I will be able to start a small business and do family portraits so this was a good start for me.

Family photoshoot 1 – 28 July 2017

So I have completed family photoshoot 1 – The Dickson Family and I am feeling positive and pleased with the outcome of the images but what I am finding a bit frustrating at the moment is that my plan was to have the assignment completed by the end of July it is now the first week of August and the other family is only available at the end of the month and I have had no more replies I think that is because it is the summer holidays and most families return to the UK.

Rethinking my assignment plan

So I decided to rethink my assignment my husband suggested we go for a drive and just relax and anything interesting I find he will stop and then I can photograph it. I decided to do this little did I know that this was going to be the way I was going to find some inspiration for this assignment on our journeys that weekend we got lost and found a small village called Lefkara it was so beautiful when I got home I decided that I was going to return to the village and ask the people if I can photograph them.  The aim for the assignment is to move out of our comfort zone and now I am feeling happy that my first plan did not work cause it is so in my comfort zone even though its people I don’t know but now walking around a village and asking people if I can take their photograph was something I have never really done before so I was feeling excited but nervous at the same time cause this was going to be a challenge.

5 August 2017-Attempt 1

Went to the village of Lefkara my idea was to walk around the small shops and talk to the people like the brief suggested and then ask if I can take their photograph I was feeling pleased with myself because I was really nervous as I approached the first person I made conversation with her about how beautiful her lace in the shop was then asked politely if I may take a photograph she was more then happy.  At the end of my journey, I only managed to get three people to say yes but I was feeling very proud of my first attempt at this because it was so out of my comfort zone and I was nervous.  I am planning to return to the village the weekend and hopefully, I will be able to complete my assignment.

-Putting my ideas together

The village of Lefkara – I returned to the village of Lefkara on the 14/08/2017 to complete my assignment this time while walking around I asked as many people as I could find if can photograph them but I found that because it was so hot that at about 12:30 the streets were becoming very quiet.
